Climbing California Feature
A cover feature done during my time working as art director for Desert Magazine through Gannett’s Design Center in September 2019.

Role
Collaborated with editor-in-chief and fellow art director to create monthly magazine under tight deadlines. Implemented schematic, created dynamic designs for layouts, coordinated with ad department, sent print-ready files and orchestrated post-production for digital magazine files and archiving.

Two week production window for design of October 2019 issue during September 2019.

Process

Plan
Receive story list and ad list. Build schematic for approval. Receive stories from editor-in-chief, along with photos, a headline, a deck and cutline information.

Design
Decide which photos will serve as main and secondary, and how to layout pages. Design elements and text styles for headlines, section headers, and infoboxes. Create illustrations, choose icons and backgrounds to enhance the design and better tell the story.

Iterate
Collaborate with editor-in-chief on changes based on feedback. Iterate design versions until the design beautifully and accurately expresses the story.

Ship
After final approval, coordinate with printer to prepare files through pre-press checks and upload to printer. Complete post-production work for digital edition and archiving.
Outcome
Desert magazine is a now shuttered monthly lifestyle magazine with distribution of over 40,000 in Palm Springs, California. The magazine was published under USA Today Network’s Design Center.
